Cape Breton Island - The northern most portion of the Canadian
province
of
Nova Scotia
. Said to be first sighted by John Cabot in 1497 on his voyage to the
New World
. The first people on the island were the native peoples ("Mi'kmaq"). In the mid-18th century the French-speaking "Acadians" arrived, followed by the Gaelic-speaking Scots. Today the island's rich cultural diversity reflects the many nationalities of its people.
The Weather - Winters are relatively mild, with an average annual snowfall of 330 cm. Summer temperatures range from 12'C (60'F) in June to 20' - 25'C (76'F - 80'F) in August. Mid-summer is pleasant, while autumn on the island with all its colour, is a sight that few can forget.
